    This editor “modern” can correct Gibbon on some minor details rather forgettable, but fails to offer new perspectives that enlarge our understanding.

    One of the quotes from these volumes still resonates with me, as I have observed the decline of the United States: At the same time, when [the Roman emperor] Decius was struggling with the violence of the storm, his mind calm and deliberate in the tumult the war, he investigated the more general causes, from the age of the Antonines, had so impetuously urged the decline of the Roman greatness.

    Right to complain now, I must add that I can not open the book wide enough to see half of the cards, and I wish there was more modern annex – Give us something more for sixty dollars that we spend.
