A “soucoyant” is an evil spirit in Caribbean lore, a reminder of past transgressions that refuse to diminish with age. In this beautifully told novel that crosses borders, cultures, and generations, a young man returns home to care for his aging mother, who suffers from dementia. In his efforts to help her and by turn make amends for their past estrangement from one another, he is compelled to re-imagine his mother’s stories for her before they slip completely into darkness. In delicate, heartbreaking tones, the names for everyday things fade while at the same time a beautiful, haunted life, stained by grief, is slowly revealed.

It ‘sa pleasure to sit down with something so beautiful, both to fit on your knees and keep in your mind.
A novel about forgetting and remembering. One of the most beautiful stories I have ever read.
If anything, the problem with Soucouyant is that it seems too small and partial, something like a piece of gear – in the end I was thirsty for more.
Chariandy written with great sensitivity and intensity of the relationship between mother and child, and also the young woman Meera, which is attached to the house to try to make up for the cruelty of the past.
The main characters were very relatable and the representation of the mother’s loss of memory was very well done.
The story of a newcomer, his son said. Our past should be a part of our present.
Before you begin this author profile, put a thing. One of the hobby’s most disadvantaged avant-garde culture is supposed to claim a space on the ground floor of a particular artistic sense, it is logical that, for example, experts who have loved before Feist trade Lacoste are colder than those that excavated the following (although the latter group is more connected than the suburb candle disciples who discovered through Feist to iPod).
Chariandy Character details carefully and wisely and present, as if the addition of a couple of shots sweet little bow while leading to the crescendo of memory that make up the final chapter.
Above all, it is a book on aging, decline, dementia experiences Adele – and the feeling of helplessness and anger that her son feels like he’s trying to take care of it.
