In the year, 354 A.D., Julian, a sheltered scholar and pacifist lives in peace-until a summons from Emperor Constantine the Great changes the young man’s life forever. Dispatched to Gaul to help reclaim a beaten Roman territory from German barbarians, Julian displays a surprising and brutal genius for survival against impossible odds. Emerging as an unlikely hero and adored by a legion of zealots, his untapped ambition is ignited-to reign as the new emperor. It’s a position of power that’ll test the loyalty of his friends, stir the ire of enemies, and cast an ominous shadow over his mad, and most magnificently impossible conquest of all… From the author of the acclaimed The Ten Thousand comes a breathtaking recreation of the historic rise to power of a ruthless yet unlikely leader plunged into the chaos of war-and his shocking fall that would become one of the most fascinating mysteries of the ages. A novel of courage and conviction, of loyalty and betrayal, of personal victory and dark ambition, Gods and Legions is epic storytelling at its most riveting.

It tells the story of the emperor Julian in the fourth century AD. It was OK, but there was something in this book that I did not like. I can not really say, but did not do so. I guess I expected more – but I do not understand.

This is another of those books that was okay, and I gave up on it, because I really want something good … maybe even a lot.

Ford creates the world does not feel the 4th century, it feels like. 9 or 10 He does not understand the ancient world could be a better test in the Middle Ages in fiction future because it `s not his forte. Christianity in the 4th century was divided and restless and did not have eternal Church of the Middle Ages, but is canvas painting Ford. Christianity was yet another new belief system for most of the Romans in the East and West. Had only been in power 30 or 40 years and it was not obvious to the majority of people in the moment in which it remained in power. One doesn `t get that feeling of Ford, however, it seems that Julian has upset the natural order of things for a long period of time, which really was not.

The novel follows closely the real life Julian, then – Kids – Get Over It – yes, real life is not all that Hollywood, although he had his moments.

As the novel begins in 356, Julian is the surviving parent of Constantine, the first Christian emperor, except the son of Constance, who now only governs emperor after the death of his brothers Constantine. Nominally Christian, Julian was fascinated by religious rites and pagan Greek philosophy and has little interest or political or military affairs. However, it is unexpectedly summoned to the Emperor’s court in Milan and elevated to the rank of Caesar (a sort of vice-emperor Constantius sole responsibility to Augustus). Is not responsible for the compensation of Gaul Germanic invaders who overran most of it.

Battles and ideas, in particular the first Persian elephants against the Germanic tribes and the Romans wrong along the river.

I have enjoyed other novels of the ancient history of Ford, but it was boring.
